The Lava silent film project inspired by Ingmar Bergman

All the young film-makers who participated in the Lava film project during spring have, all in their own personal way, sought inspiration in Ingmar Bergman’s work and personality, and they have composed their own music and sound effects for their productions, which include silent documentaries, family dramas and stories from the Bible. The films will be screened in Målarsalen during the festival.

The idea behind the project is to work with images and music or sound in order to explore how the combination of newly composed music and photography affects mood and staging.

We started by holding an inspirational workshop where we listened to music and watched and discussed modern and classical silent films. Then we did some practical workshops where everyone could learn the basics of film-making and musical composing.

While we were doing this, we built up a Bergman room for research and inspiration where the participants could write their scripts, watch Bergman films, work on set design and, later, edit their work.

During this time, they also worked in Lava’s sound workshop and composed music. Turning to Ingmar Bergman for inspiration has given rise to some unexpected associations and ideas. Everyone who participated in the project has made very personal films.
