The Lullaby of Mary Magdalene is a film by Gabrirela Novak and Linda Nilsson who were inspired by Ingmar Bergman’s thoughts on religion. The film is based on the biblical story about two women who are arguing about the custody of a child. In the end they let a judge determine which one is the best mother. In the film, the story is told from two completely different perspectives. Linda Nilsson says that
The very first time we met various ideas came up, and there was one we thought was especially attractive. It all started when we decided we wanted to show how two people can perceive an event in two completely different ways. We watched several Bergman films and were inspired by his biblical and existential approach, as well as his strong portraits of women.
One of the members of our group thought we should base our film on the story in which King Solomon is asked to arbitrate between two women and determine which of them is the rightful mother of a child.
Now we talk about King Solomon’s divine wisdom, but we have shifted the focus from him to the women and the relationship between them, and we have moved our story to the 1920s. There are two reasons for this. One is that it was the great era of silent film, but the main reason is that we wanted to show that the old biblical stories are just as valid today. /Gabriela Novak och Linda Nilsson
