The Ingmar Bergman International Theatre Festival, which begins on May 27 and ends on June 6, 2009, presents Eraritjaritjaka by Heiner Goebbels from Théâtre Vidy, Lausanne, Switzerland. Heiner Goebbels is a leading director on the international scene, famous for his experimental stage productions. This is the first time his work is being performed in Scandinavia. His productions have been received with great acclaim all over the world.

”It is great to be able to present such an idiosyncratic and forward-looking artist,” says Sofi Lerström, assistant artistic director and head of the Festival.

The groundbreaking and original composer and director Heiner Goebbels has based his unusually named Eraritjaritjaka on texts by Nobel laureate Elias Canetti. Eraritjaritjaka means ”the yearning for something that has been lost” in the language of the Australian Aborigines. The subtitle is “Musée des phrases”. The play features the celebrated French actor André Wilms and the Mondrian String Quartet, and will be performed in French with music by Heiner Goebbels, Shostakovich, Ravel, Gavin Bryars and George Crumb. Surprising and astonishing special effects are achieved by means of live video and lighting effects.

The Festival also includes: Cries and Whispers – a co-production featuring Dramaten and Toneelgroep, Amsterdam; From the Lives of the Marionettes with the Thalia Theater, Hamburg and Quartet, by Heiner Müller from the Salzburg Festival.

The Ingmar Bergman International Festival is sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and is based on the entire oevre of Ingmar Bergman including international guest performances, seminars, a fashion show, film screenings, clubs, photo exhibitions, musical soirées and much, much more.
